After gathering enough donations, the team that created a perfume that claims to smell like space is now ready for the scent’s mass production and distribution.

A crowdfunding campaign was set up by Matthew Richmond so that he can share with people outside NASA, the perfume called “Eau de Space.”

Over a thousand people have supported their effort, that Richmond and his team surpassed their initial goal of $1,969 and received over $38,000.

“Decades ago, NASA contracted specialists to develop the ‘smell of space’ to help train astronauts before launch into orbit,” said Richmond.

He also added that the smell “has been ‘locked behind’ red tape for years and had only gotten permission for release through “[sheer] determination, grit, a lot of luck, and a couple of Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests.” This is to help prepare astronauts for their time in space.

According to former NASA astronaut and space shuttle pilot Tony Antonelli, the scent is a “strong, unique and a metallic mixture of other things.” Other astronauts have also said space smells like seared steak, raspberries and rum.
